Roku Remote Volume Not Working? Here Is What To Do

Roku has been my favorite device for streaming content since I bought my first Roku streaming stick a few years ago.

However, the volume button on the remote hasn’t always worked.

If you are ever left with your Roku remote volume not working when you press the button, then this guide is for you.

Roku Remote Volume Not Working

Listed below, are some of the steps that I have had to use to get my Roku remotes volume button working again.

Roku Remote Volume Not Working

Some steps are simple, and others can be a little more complex.

However, if you have tried all of the different solutions and still can’t fix Roku volume control issues, then it may be time to contact the manufacturer of your remote.

Replace the batteries

The first thing that you should try if your Roku volume button doesn’t work is to replace the batteries.

If the batteries are dead, then there is nothing you can do. You will have to buy some new batteries and swap them with the old ones.

You can do this by pulling off the battery cover and then putting a new set of batteries back in.

If the batteries are not dead, then try the next method.

Are the buttons stuck?

Sometimes, buttons on remotes can get stuck.

Roku Remote Stuck Buttons

This is usually the case when a sticky-fingered kid has had their hands all over the working Roku remote.

This is a common problem that many people face.

If you can see any dirt on the buttons, then you can wipe it off with a damp cloth or even a paper towel.

If the buttons are just sticky, you can try using a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or q-tip.

Is your TV muted?

Maybe the problem isn’t that your remote is not working, but that the TV is muted.

Obviously, if your TV is muted, there will not be any sound.

If this is the case, then you will need to un-mute the TV using your TV controls before you can use your Roku remote again.

Re-pair your controller

Another thing that you can try if your remote volume level doesn’t work is to re-pair your controller.

Some Roku remotes need to be paired with the Roku streaming stick before you can use them (If yours has an IR sensor, you won’t need to do this).

Roku Remote Pairing Guide

To pair the Roku box with the remote, try taking out the batteries for a few seconds, then put them back in.

As long as the remote is near the Roku device, it should automatically pair.

If not, and you have a pairing button in the battery compartment of the remote, do the step above, only this time you will need to hold down the pairing button for around 5 seconds (or until the light at the top starts flashing).

Are you using the Roku TV App?

One handy feature of the Roku smartphone app is ‘Private Listening’.

Roku TV App

This allows you to listen to your Roku device by using headphones connected to your phone.

Whilst this app is perfect for those who wish to watch TV in bed without waking their partner up, what can sometimes happen is you accidentally turn Private Listening on when you need the sound to come out of the TV.

If you use the app, double-check that Private Listening is not turned on as when it is, it mutes the sound to the TV.

Reset the Roku Device

Sometimes, if you are having problems with your Roku volume, then it is possible that the settings on the Roku itself have become corrupted.

If this is the case, then you will need to reset the Roku.

To do this, simply unplug your Roku device from the wall via the power cable and plug it back in

After a few seconds, the Roku will reboot and you should be able to use your Roku remote again.

Wiring Problem

As your Roku connects to the TV via an HDMI cable, the way it sends the audio to your TV is through this cable.

Make sure that the HDMI cable is properly connected to both the TV and the box itself.

If you are using an old, damaged cable, try using a new one.

It is also a good idea to change the HDMI port to see if the problems lie there.

Wrong Audio Output

Make sure that the correct audio output is selected within the settings menus of both the Roku and the TV.

If the audio output is set to the wrong one, then the sound will be coming out of the headphones port instead of the speakers.

If you are not sure what the correct audio output is, then you may need to check the manual that came with the TV.

Conclusion – Roku Volume Not Working

In conclusion, if you have tried all the above methods to try and fix your Roku remote’s volume buttons, but are still having volume issues then it is possible that the remote is dead and needs to be replaced with a new device.
